OVERVIEW OF THE LIVING DESERT
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is celebrating 50 years. It’s a place that I always enjoy visiting. Seeing the animals in their natural habitat is wonderful. There is so much to see! There are
three main areas. You can enjoy North America where you will see big horn sheep, bobcats, eagles, wolves and mountain lions, for instance. Secondly, you can travel to the southern hemisphere you can enjoy Africa and take in cheetahs, giraffes, kudu, wild dogs and hyenas. Or stroll through Australia and see wallabies, free fling budgies, emus or singing kookas.
HIKING AT THE LIVING DESERT
If you’re up to hiking, you’ll enjoy
any of their trails. There are levels for every type of hiker. For example, the Discovery loop is about .05 miles and you will stroll though a palo verde and smoketree desert woodland. Another example is The Adventure Loop which takes you through a hilly desert with a climb to an exhibit on the San Andreas Fault. This trail is about 1.5 miles long. Finally, the most adventurous trail is the Wilderness Loop. This 5 mile hike provides you with a climb up a rocky desert mountain where you will see gorgeous vistas and experience wildlife along the way.
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is also a teaching hub. Kids and adults can enjoy several educational opportunities. For example, there are camps and youth programs as well as field trips. You can take in speakers and lectures from renowned researchers who will talk about their work. Also, the Living Desert has also hosted trips around world.
Find the time to go to the “Wild Lights” Extravaganza at the Living Desert. You will truly enjoy it.
